Few directors in Hollywood have had a career with as much variety as Michael Apted. His resume includes critically acclaimed films like “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “Gorillas In the Mist,” big budget franchise movies from the Bond and Narnia series, and landmark documentaries — his “Up” series, which has for 50 years followed a group of British school children every seven years since they were seven years old. (It’s truly remarkable.)

I had a chance to speak with Apted at length about (among other things) the process of filmmaking, both features and documentaries, what he’s learned from the incredible roster of actors with whom he’s worked over the years, and his new film “Unlocked,” which opens September 1st and stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Douglas, Toni Collette, Orlando Bloom, and John Malkovich.
