Has D’Angelo Russell Lost John Q. Lakers Fan?

Posted by on Jan 24, 2017 in Kamenetzky Brothers Land O'Lakers Podcast, Lakers Audio, Opinion, Podcast | 1 comment

We’re back, and on today’s show are talkin’…

  • …the worst loss in Lakers history, at least if you measure by points.
  • …how LA’s cold streak since that 10-10 start impacts Jeanie Buss and the big decisions on basketball ops staring her in the face.
  • …whether the average Lakers fan is still fully on board with D’Angelo Russell. Because man alive, he’s a lightning rod.

And finally, why are NBA coaches so comfortable talking politics?

The Lakers at the Quarter Pole

Posted by on Dec 1, 2016 in Kamenetzky Brothers Land O'Lakers Podcast, Lakers Analysis, Lakers Audio, Opinion, Podcast |

10-10!

Surprising, to say the least, but 20 games in, the Lakers are a .500 team hanging on the edge of the playoff ladder. To put things in perspective, last season the team’s 10th win didn’t come until February 2nd. This year? November 30. Aside from the most optimistic heart-over-head diehards, few saw this coming. But it has, so what does it mean going forward? We break it down, focusing on…

  • Nick Young’s injury. What does it do to the rotation? What if he misses a full month?
  • Brandon Ingram. His progress to this point, and whether it’s time to go all in and call the kid a future star.
  • Luke Walton. Why he’s been successful, and how a combination of coaching talent and good timing could serve the Lakers very well for a long time.

All that and… well, actually, no more. Just all that.

Early Season Surprises, and “The Walking Dead”

Posted by on Nov 3, 2016 in Kamenetzky Brothers Land O'Lakers Podcast, Lakers Audio, Opinion, Podcast | 1 comment

So in this episode, we talk about early season surprises for the Lakers. We also talk about “The Walking Dead.”

And the best news for Lakers fans? The two conversations are totally unrelated! What a nice change from the last couple seasons!

We kick things off with a Warriors-themed news segment, talking about LeBron’s Halloween troll, K.D.’s continuing need to explain his relationship with Russ, and Damian Lillard’s assessment of Golden State’s defense sans Andrew Bogut. From there, it’s into the early part of the Lakers season. All in all, very encouraging… and keep in mind we recorded before Wednesday’s win in Atlanta. Is Julius Randle’s hot start sustainable? Does Nick Young stay in the starting lineup? What looks different about the team at large? Can Luol Deng gain some consistency?

Finally, we bring back AAK! Ask a Kamenetzky. This week’s theme? “The Walking Dead.”

As always, thanks for listening.

Jordan Clarkson the 6th man, good CBA news, and Sasha statues!

Posted by on Oct 11, 2016 in Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, Kamenetzky Brothers Land O'Lakers Podcast, Lakers Analysis, Lakers News, Lou Williams, Opinion, Podcast | 1 comment

With preseason games 2 and 3 in the books, we have a little better feel for this Lakers team, and for the first time in a while… the sun is poking through the clouds!

This team, in our humble opinion, still isn’t going to win a ton of games, but on both sides of the ball have given Lakers fans all the feels to this point in the fake game schedule. Some of the more interesting trends: Jordan Clarkson has come off the bench for all three games, with Lou Williams as a starter. The results have been positive all around, so will Luke Walton stick with that lineup? If so, is that a good thing? Julius Randle has improved his playmaking skills over the offseason. How far can he take it? What about Brandon Ingram? Any concern over his slow start?

This after kicking around some big news, including happy reports on negotiations for a new CBA, and a very unusual ambassadorship for Yao Ming.

Plus, we reveal our most intriguing non-Warriors/Cavs teams in both conferences. Then we cap it off not just with statues for Sasha Vujacic, but a rousing game of Sasha Vujacic trivia!

It’s likely more than you can handle in a single episode, but we’re willing to risk it.

Training Camp Opens, “The Luke Walton Effect,” and gefilte fish

Posted by on Sep 30, 2016 in Byron Scott, Jeanie Buss, Jim Buss, Kamenetzky Brothers Land O'Lakers Podcast, Lakers Analysis, Lakers Audio, Luke Walton, Opinion, Podcast |

The NBA is officially underway! The Lakers, while enjoying all camp has to offer — canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, orienteering, and trying to make out with the counselors at the girls camp across the lake — are also very clearly enjoying the first days of the Luke Walton era. Like, a lot. Which isn’t to say they didn’t enjoy last season’s circus in the same way… except it kinda is.

Hopefully it lasts a while, but for the time being the players who were here last season, particularly the young ‘uns, and particularly D’Angelo Russell, have clearly taken a shine to the new regime.

We break down all the big stories from the early days of training camp, including (but not limited to)…

  • Evidence a genuine culture has the chance to take root this year.
  • How feeling empowered by his coaching staff could help Russell on the floor.
  • Why Kobe needed to retire for Walton’s approach to work.
  • The Jim Buss Timeline: Mitch Kupchak says he’s really not aware of it. Land O’Lakers Factcheckers rate that a full four Paul Pierce Wheelchairs on the lie scale. Still, while it seems reasonable to believe the Lakers won’t make the Western Conference Finals (don’t shoot the messenger), what happens to Jim Buss if the Lakers show legitimate improvement, over the course of the year? Any shot he stays? And if Jim goes, does Mitch go, too?
  • Gefilte fish.
